OK. The day has finally arrived. I have a shoot today and the client has requested I dress 'smart casual'.
Now for someone with a kooky sense of style such as myself - when someone says 'smart casual' to me I just go 'wtf?'. My friends tell me its like business casual, and I can't go wrong with a collared shirt, but to me that is business attire, not casual. Smart casual to me is a snappy shirt paired maybe with high waisted satin shorts or cruise pants etc and not too much jewelery. Jeans are a little TOO casual, right?
Maybe a collared shirt and no tie for a male, but for a female? I'm not entirely convinced.
So I am packing a grab bag of everything collared and in between and letting the client decide when I get there.
By the end of the day we shall finally have an answer to WTF is smart casual. Keep your eyes peeled ;) I am hoping to snap off a photo of what they decide on as visual proof.
Unfortunately it really depends on the company, it may be easier to list what not to wear and go from there.
For many companies the no nos in smart casual are:
-Ripped clothes
-Clothes with offensive prints, or large slogans/brand names
-Sneakers
-Thongs
Safe bets are usually polo tops, button down shirts, and 'slacks'.
Although I do enjoy pushing the boundaries of what I can wear, e.g. the pants may be smart trousers, but they are tartan, and the shirt is an acid green.
Either that or I some how end up looking like a 70s cop/drug dealer. I blame my watching of "Life on Mars" Thursday nights before casual Friday.
I've always thought of smart casual as an open collared shirt and casual, but non denim, pants. I guess for a woman that would mean a casual skirt of sorts.
to me smart casual means, dont dress in a business way but in a 'dress up' fashionable way thats not casual, so basically that means anything goes as long as it looks really nice
