Get some good basics in black and grey - it's a pretty boring suggestion but lets face it they match with everything! My suggestion would be to spend more on some good quality staples - a great pair of black skinny pants; and good black skirt that is a style that can be worn casually or for work; some basic singlets/tees in easy to work with colours.
One way to cover the more limited trend pieces is to scour ebay/second hand shops and pick them up really cheap! :) Then they can suppliment the key basics and change more frequently.
a great pair of jeans in a cut that suits you. you can wear them with pretty much anything from a plain white singlet and some chunky jewelery, to a blazer, inside boots, or even dress them up...
i agree with tania- buy good quality staples. seasonal pieces can be picked up from chain stores relatively cheaply, and basic tees/singlets in plenty of colors are always a good idea. ebay is good if you have a "conventional" body shape- i personally find it hard to buy much on there.
and i'm just going to throw this one out there- outlet malls. we may hate them, but today i went with my little sister (who is looking for corporate clothes) and she walked away from cue with a gorgeous wine colored fitted jacket and dress ($100 for both), cute top ($69), pencil skirt ($39) and pants, which incedentally match a skirt suit she bought 3 weeks ago for $520, which were $225 when she bought the suit (which is why she didnt buy them)- for all of $49. Staples which will last her years and probably won't age, decent quality and cheap.
Staples are an awesome way to expand your wardrobe - I bought a plain brown waist belt the other day and some casual tops that I can dress up or down in plain colours just from our local shopping centre.
I also have a black knee length jacket that I wear with pretty much everything from Portmans.
As for staples i think you`d be best off getting classic peices that are always in style, such as a pair of great fitting black pants,a stellar pair of versatile heels, and maybe a pencil skirt as it is both dressy and casaul
