The Environment

I was just wondering what everyone thinks about the environment crisis and what we can do to help. We have such a water crisis in Victoria, our family house in the country used to have a dam filled with water, now it looks more like a puddle. We have no water in the tank anymore, the rainwater is completely dry and its scary that when you turn the tap nothing comes out.

Has anyone seen an inconvenient truth? How disturbing! What can we do to stop this?

take shorter showers?
in brisbane we are getting (eek!) recycled water now because otherwise it's gonna run out. Kinda scary but its a mixture of poor planning on the governments part (we get rain- but none of it seems to fall on the dams, and the dams cant keep up with population growth) and poor infrastructure (old leaky underground pipes), as well as consumption. I think its important to be aware of the water you are wasting.

Good topic J. Inconvenient Truth was a great film and global warming is definitely a big problem that our generation is going to need to face. No easy answers though.

The environment is going to be a major issue (perhaps the biggest if we manage to avoid a world war) over the coming generations.

The trouble is we really don't know the truth. An Inconvenient Truth is heavily skewed because of Gore's political nature and ambitions, and also relies on a lot of unproved data. Then on the flip side you have a lot of scientists saying that we're seeing weather change, but not as a result of global warming.

On the face of it we have to alter what we output - even if we're not experiencing global warming it's better not to pollute (as has historically been the case for the human race). One of the most staggering things is electronic devices on standby - that is, when you're computer monitor or tv still has a little light on even though it's turned off. I read an article recently indicating that if everyone in Victoria turned their devices off at the wall, then one whole power station could simply be turned off. That's a heck of a lot of electricity, and a lot of unnecessary fossil fuel being burnt.

On the water front, recycled water is necessary. Yesterday's MX had some 'expert' saying he'd never drink it, he'd rather go thirsty then take the risk. Drop him in the middle of the dessert with a bottle of recycled water and see what he does. When we're facing such an issue, comments from such people are completely pathetic. People have to face facts, if they've ever been to Europe, Singapore, the US, or a town down stream of another then odds on they've drunk recycled water.

People have to be more conscience of what they waste. If a device is on and you're not using it, turn it off. Car pool. Have shorter showers. Turn off dripping taps.

Did anyone watch Live Earth?
My jaw, along with my sisters jaw, dropped to the ground with amazement when James Mathison went through the recent world disasters...then listed Ben Cousins getting addicted to crystal meth as a disaster.
I thought it was way out of line.
Wot does everyone else think??

P.S I hv the 2007 State of the Environment report on my desk for WA and...well...lets just say...its not good people!! : (

I missed that, really wanted to see it to. I did catch the one-sided 'debate' afterwards - Tony Jones has to be one of the most blatantly biased journalists the ABC has ever put forwards.
