Some of you may remember the skinny model debate which arose when fellow Fashionisers, Marajoara Swimwear were scrutinised by the fashion council about their size 8 to 12 models used on the catwalk.

Well, the skinny model debate has arisen again with comments at Rosemount Fashion Week by Wayne Cooper who described Aussie models as "Porky" when compared to those in Europe.

However the top designer says that the media scritiny has been "ridiculous" and has been taken too seriously. He also stated that he sent back a model that was anorexic once and refuses to use models that are clearly too skinny. But, he does say this: "Models are the same, they are supposed to be skinny and tall".

Azzollini swimwear was accused of using models that were too skinny by some, with others saying that the models were completely healthy.

The accusations come not long after the death of two model sisters from anorexia. Eliana Ramos, 18, collapsed six months after her sister Luisel had a heart attack.

Three months prior to these deaths, another Brazilian model died of anorexia at just 21 years of age.

How fine is the line between a slender model and one that has anorexia?

I'm not sure how many times this subject comes up but I am with my friend Alicia's comments on this site and her analyses, (see her previous posts and her blog referenced from mine); that one needs to look more deeply at what people mean by skinny/fat, what agenda the person commenting on has, what personal or social issues they have, to understand the workings of the fashion industry, to understand social and anthropological trends, to understand the wealth of reasearch into body attractiveness, to understand the media, to understand genetics, to understand in depth body composition, to actually know in real life top working models and the lifestyle and above all, to avoid one liners and headline seeking snippets.

There are always going to be people shooting off crass remarks but as a professional model I know, as do the vast majority in the business know, what looks good, what sells, what brings in the personal money and what is healthy and what is not. We just get on with it and have a great, GREAT time:)

Ignore the hype and hyperbole, it will always be there.

There's so many facets to these stories, and so many people choose to look at one segment and blow it entirely out of proportion.

It's a fact that most high-end and couture designers want slender models for their runway. Just like it's a fact that rappers want curvaceous, generally skanky models in their videos.

I think the bottom line is that, where children are concerned, parents need to step up to the plate and educate their kids on what is healthy/ beautiful and what is digusting/ degrading. I can look at a male model in the lastest Calvin Klein ad and know that that model is not the be-all-end-all of what will make me attractive as a man, but a child doesn't have that ability per sé. Just like the stint about the violence in D&G's ad campaign, you have to know how to interpret imagery as an adult, and you can't blame the distributer of that imagery if you take it the wrong way, or if your child takes it the wrong way because they haven't been taught otherwise. Should I start causing a ruckus because the models in body-building magazines represent a certain ideal that I will never attain? I don't know if this makes sense or not, but it just seems to me that too many people refuse to look at these sort of topics with any sort of open-mindedness.

I'm not saying that it's right that there are models who are killing themselves to fit a certain size of clothing, not by any means. What I'm getting at is that beauty is individual, and just because a certain group of designers choose to use slender models for their runways, people shouldn't take this to mean that the designer is saying 'this is the only way to be beautiful'.

gee, and I thought it was because designers just hated women and wanted to make them as masculine as possible :3

there is nothing wrong in being skinny, as long as you look healthy. there's a misconception on people who have eating disorders to those who are naturally skinny. not everyone can put on weight easily, and not being able to put on weight doesnt mean you have an eating disorder. feeling comfortable with the way you look is what matters most, be it skinny or curvy!
