The skinny model debate

Posted: 11.06.2007 at 03.00
Hi ,

I am told I am too skinny by many people, ribs show, hip bones show..yet the general view is when i am doing promo work in clubs, etc that people really like my look. Just confuses the hell out of me as to what people really think, on one hand you are caned for being to skinny and on the other hand you are applauded. Hell i eat a reasonably good diet and generally am happy with my appearance :) wouldnt mind some boobs but hey I am TGirl not a genetic female :)

I think as long as models (male and female, eat, feel comfortable) then they should be left alone. There is a need for all shape and sizes in modelling so they should all be treated equally.

Just my two-pences worth from a scrawny ass Tranny :)

I have a naturally thin frame and have been put into the "eating disorder" bracket plenty (I naturally have protrudent bones, no matter what I eat). You do get a few models who are grossly underweight (although they are not necessarily size 0, they are underweight for their stature) but in the same respect, you have to say it is unhealthy to be grossly overweight also; for some reason it is not seen as bad to call someone "anorexic" if they're thin but it's an atrocity if you call and overweight person "fat".

I think so long as they're healthy, thin models shouldn't be persecuted.

Well, the skinny model debate has arisen again with comments at Rosemount Fashion Week by Wayne Cooper who described Aussie models as "Porky" when compared to those in Europe.

Source

"Porky" Aussie models? I think not! I'm an aussie model and have been backstage (for obvious reasons) and I would not describe one of them as "porky" even at a stretch! The average size for Aussie models is AUS size 8-10. Due to the height of models (none were shorter than 5'8.5") that is very slim!

That statement of '"Porky" Aussie models' is utterly absurd.

From Hilary.com
"In a recent survey, 11 percent of respondents said that if genetic predisposition to obesity was identified in their unborn children, they would opt for abortion"

I think the skinny/obese fixation is funneling down to a pretty thick issue... Growing up i was skinny to a fault- then puberty hit me in the hips and then on the thighs and suddenly i wasn't so skinny anymore. People's comments on my weight gain hurt, but not as much as the guilt i would feel after eating and the self-flagellation i put myself under for suddenly not being able to fit into my 25W jeans. Then one day i started losing weight again, probably because my hormones had stabilized or whatever. Suddenly, i was skinny and people once again had comments, this time on being too thin and looking frail. Geez if you listen to people, you're always gonna be at fault for being one thing 'too' much. I am happy to say i am at MY ideal weight now- the one i maintain by eating what i want, and which still allows me to wear the outfits i like.

An abortion to avoid a child being fat? That is disgusting.

Yeah... I mean, there may be a predisposition but that doesn't mean the child will definitely be overweight... why not take the information on board and make sure your child gets plenty of exercise, a good diet and a healthy relationship towards food?

Exactly. That kind of motive for abortion really sicks me. It's like a case I read recently of some woman aborting her baby in order to reduce her carbon footprint. She should be shot.

I have posted my opinion on this debate many times in many places, including my high school paper my senior year.
I am naturally 100 pounds, and constantly deal with the "you need to eat more" you are "too skinny" you look "anorexic and bulimic" and i find it outrageous that people are so apt to calling normally healthy skinny woman, those kinds of names.
But oh no, you wouldnt call an overweight person fat now would you? Not to their face, but you have the balls to call me twig to my face? Where does this make sense?
I am naturally skinny, and it is VERY VERY hard for me to gain weight. and i eat a lot of food. I lose weight very fast, and lose my appetite without food. It is very dangerous. I love to eat and i love food a lot. So do not judge someone based upon their appearance. That is misleading, and immature. As a society, we have taken the word "skinny" and demoralized its meaning to 'twig" "anorexic".. and it has become acceptable to call those who eat and eat, those names. Do not assume anything about being skinny, because it is nice yes, but at the same time, it is very hard. It isnt easy not gaining weight or muscle when everything you do burns 100 calories very fast.
this is something that me and my mother are very passionate about and will always stand our ground on this debate...
because unless you are in a skinny womans shoes,
you have no CLUE what it is like.
just like i have no idea what its like to be overweight.

People need to look past the outer appearance..
because i didnt ask to be skinny, and i didnt make myself this way.
so dont assume that i have.

I was often called "lucky" - "lucky your legs don't snap off & go up your buttocks" that was by family members!

But, I love when I get skinnier & people start commenting on how they liked me better with more meat on my bones! Oh come on, so my personality changed & you like more meat on my bones? Cannibals!! They're usually the ones battling the disorders but are in denial & would rather pick meat of others bones. :)

It's all a bit funny though, I think if it isn't ego driven then it's fear driven...long live the beauty of any body not morbidly obese!
