A group of residents who immigrated to Canada have backed the legal action taken against the Government by a Toronto criminal lawyer over its ruling that all new citizens must pledge their loyalty to the monarch and present and future generations of the Royal Family.
Mr Roach, who is now a permanent citizen of Canada, which is one of 53 Commonwealth nations in which Elizabeth II is Head of State, is supported in his legal battle by several more equally irate immigrants who have long resided in the country.
One of those, Indian-born commerical photographer Ashok Charles who has resided in Canada since the age of 22, has been recalling the way in which he renounced reference to the Queen during a ceremony in 2004.
Quizzed about why he took the oath, despite his opposition to its contents and very existence, the 51-year-old revealed: "I feel it was done under duress. I needed the advantages and benefits of a Canadian passport. I didn't see any alternative."
