To tattoo or not to tattoo?

Okay so for over a year now i have been contemplating the addition of a tattoo to me! Every time i get the urge a friend or someone i know gets one and its always so cool. Okay there are good tattoo's and bad tattoo's. I personally hate the Chinese charater tattoo's or silly maori tats and such unless there is a cultural connection... i mean if you can't speak Chinese should you have it written over you?

Anyway my best friend katie has this funky tattoo of a girl on her arm and its kind of an stylised version of herself. its bloody cool and its unique.

Another friend has a huge phoenix across her shoulder and down her arm. It all orange, red and such and in a kind of artdeco-esque design, very funky...

I've kind of been stuck on the idea of having a tattoo on my left upper arm in some kind of abstracted floral/geometric design... i've been playing around on photoshop with a few things, i want it to be my own unique thing... and kind of along the line of these styles from marimekko.
I really don't want to have any black in the tattoo though. all soft pastel colours so that when it fades i won't need to retouch it, rather it will age with me (haha)

So yeah what does everyone think about tattoo's? Yay or Nay?

Personally I would never get one, because it's just not me... but I know a lot of other fashionisers have them and have some great personal ones that suit them. I love the idea of it being in pale colours and more like a meaningful artwork - both images are fantastic! I think I would say the first one - love it!

I'm a nay, then a yay... then a nay.

I think the top one is really cool though, not sure how well it will look on skin...

if you're not absolutely certain that you want a tattoo, then i think the obvious answer would be don't get one.

Yay from me!
But...
Why are you asking for approval from others? Or even their opinion/s on your designs?
A tattoo is a personal and individual thing, especially when choosing the design!
Please don't think I am trying to offend you but isn't it about personal choice? And asking for others opinions will only sway your decision making and ultimately make it about others as opposed to your own personal preference.

lol no i wan't asking for people to tell me what to get... i was just stating my preference... and asking what people thought of tattoo's in general.

pastel & light colors are the easiest to fade... black and red last longer on the skin...

just get whatever you wanna get...
i got a female love bitsface hello kitty and dickhead dear daniel each on my inner arm
pretty shocking but who cares!

i think tattoos are great on guys. on girls, they can look trashy so to get something unique and feminine is generally a good idea (butterfiles, faries, dolphins, roses have all been overdone). Generally, I would go something that can be covered if you need it to be (ie if you work in a very corporate environment, something that is under your suit). And don't get your significant other's name unless you have a really good contingency plan in case you break up.
