My advice in no particular order:

- Be prepared for a few hours of pain. An arm piece or anything large will take a while, and if color is involved, sometimes you have to go back more than once to have it completed. I have friends with sleeves and full arm tattoos who spent up to 20 hours in the chair.

- Avoid solid blocks of red. Its hard for the artist to ensure its perfect because the fact you bleed while they are working makes it hard for them to see if its been done exactly right or not. Again, it may mean you have to go back again to get it touched up.

- Be prepared to become nocturnal. You definitely cant get a suntan while its healing.

- Research where you go before you get your tattoo done. There are plenty of parlors but there are only a few true artists. Ask people where they got theirs, good or bad, and make mental notes. Ask to see an artists portfolio before you book in with them. Don't ever just walk in and get it done on a whim.

- Last, but not least - Shave the area you are getting done before you go to the parlor. Areas such as legs, lower arm, pubic etc all have hair that is too thick to work over. It needs to be removed.

Thought about this for 2 years before getting it. I had it inked on my hipbone so it can stay hidden when the need arises (like at the office or corporate functions).

has anyone noticed a trend for guys having tattoos on their lower legs? Lots of guys are wearing shorts with tattoos on their legs - just wondering what people thought of that?

Tacky, not the stars, I meant the tat on the leg, not a fan.

I guess you can at least hide it when you wear pants.

I'd also add:
- Do it during cooler months, especially if it will be a large design. Healing in the heat can be a real bitch

- Think about where you want to be in five years time, will visible tattoos hinder your career progression/will the subject of the tattoo hinder you in anyway? It's one reason why I plan to leave my arms clean, sure I could hide things with long sleeves, but then I'd boil everytime the weather got hotter and I went outside.

And I second Danica's point about research. Even if all you're getting is simple text. I willingly paid extra and drove out of my way to get my first tattoo done because the parlour was well established, clean and one of the best in the region (won many awards), there was one closer to home who'd have done it for $30 cheaper but he had no reputation to go on.
