Ever bought something woollen and wondered which sheep it came from? Probably not. But Netherlands label Flocks have decided you should know, and truth be told the concept is rather cute.
Each Flocks garment is tagged with an ID number of the little sheep that provided the wool, and comes with a certificate detailing breed, weight, year and place of birth, and a picture of the animal.
Fashion at the moment has a very strong leaning towards unique, one-off items, as opposed to the mass produced. The most interesting thing about Flocks is the story they tell; the feeling of purchasing a garment that is exclusive, has a history and is highly personal. Fashion designers; does your label tell a story?
This is a gorgeous idea, and should tie in nicely with the ethical consumer movement that is moving more and more into fashion. Knowing exactly where the wool has come from would heavily change my perception of it, and make it all the more special.
