What do you think of Lady GaGa's fashion?

So its ok for designers to use fashion as ploys for attention but its whoreish for a person?

Yes, it's all right for fashion designers to use fashion as a ploy... because they're in fashion. Just like it would be all right for a musician to use music as a ploy... Or heck, we could drop the word ploy and simply use talent here. I'm seeing a direct correlation between industry and talent. Mind you, that argument completely misses the point.

Who cares if the runway is different than the streets, who says it has to be?

Lots of people care. And the law says it has to be.

Who wants to be boring...why can't we wear 'costumes' daily.

Go for it. Wear a clown costume. No one says you can't. But people will have an opinion.

Fashion shouldn't be taken too seriously.

I don't see anyone taking fashion too seriously in this thread. Except perhaps the subject of this thread.

Clearly she isn't doing it for the money, she spends far too much to be turning too much of a profit.

Of course not. I'm sure she's attempting to raise her profile not to sell music, but to help charity. That's why her official site is full of pages that help you donate to charity. Oh wait, it's not. It's full of pages that attempt to sell ring tones, CDs, women's apparel (which hilariously features far too much cloth for her to consider wearing). Because she's in it for the money.

It's a pretty safe formula:
Garish outfits attract paps
Paps sell pictures
Pictures raise profile
Raise profiles sells music

I think she'll make money from that, no?

We love her.

Go for it. No one is stopping you. And no one is stopping anyone else. Just as no one is stopping others from not liking her, or finding her tacky, cheap, an attention whore, and so on and so forth. And that's their right. Because 1) they're entitled to an opinion 2) this is a forum, thus a place for opinions.

Strangely enough they've been able to do that without the puerile twattery such as "Get over yourselves, self proclaimed fashionistas" that you offer up in place of a cohesive argument.

I think Lady GaGa's fashion is fun. It breaks the stereotype in fashion.
It's quirky and vibrant. I'm not saying that it's like wearable and stuff but it's fine. I mean guys, shed some light to her.
I don't think she's trying to get attention maybe she's just taking it edgier.

i always love a good rant (and hey, i like to make fun too)

there is a difference between fashion and costumes.

Fashion can be defined as:
1. The prevailing style or custom, as in dress or behavior: or
2. Something, such as a garment, that is in the current mode.

Costume is defined as:
1. A style of dress, including garments, accessories, and hairstyle, especially as characteristic of a particular country, period, or people.
2. An outfit or a disguise worn on Mardi Gras, Halloween, or similar occasions.
3. A set of clothes appropriate for a particular occasion.

so you see the difference is quite simple- costumes are not for everyday use and fashion is what is in the "current mode". Lady Gaga's attire is not "the norm" by anybody's standard, nor is it appropriate for the occasions she wears them.

That's not to say "costume" isn't used on the runway- it is, but it is there for that occasion.

and btw- it is trashy if ur walking around in fishnets and a thong.

finally- clearly she is not doing it for anything other than publicity- and thats fine, it seems to be working for her. but lets not kid ourselves and pretend she is doing it for anything other than that. what i would like to know is, before her first single came out, was she dressing like that? or was she normal and then decided to turn up the shock factor? that will tell you her true motivations.

and no. we dont all love her- maybe you do. but hell you will find people that love anything.

I dont mind the way Lady GaGa dresses, I think its more of a persona thing then just trying to raise hype.

To me she is selling an idea of who she is with her music, statements and clothing. In the sense that Madonna was controversial in her attire but it was a package as to who she is.

I would never go out and wear the clothing Lady GaGa wears but if I was being paid to be a performer I think that it would be a different story.

She won't be around for long.
Soon outlandish costumes will become boring and predictable, people will no longer be suprised by her outfits, people won't care.

And when her next album (if she ever releases one, i can imagine her seeping the life out this album, dragging it out as much as possible to squeeze every last drop of money and publicity available, before considering doing the work she's meant to be doing as her primary title as a "musician"!) comes out, she won't be anything new or exciting.

It depresses me that people like her make millions... and people with talent who care about their work and only their work, aren't even recognised.

Stefani Germanotta dressed as such;

Once she started attempting to become a musician / singer she turned to ripping her clothes of to gain attention.

The key from all this is it's a lack of clothes for attention seeking (be it publicity or otherwise) that underpins her career. And therein lie her motivation.

I don't believe that were able to leave the "puerile twattery" out of it. Fanning rumours of her being a herm. isn't exactly the epitome of class. Who cares if she was, its an insult to people who do suffer from that condition to use it to make fun of someone.

It really is terrible that people say she has no talent, when you come up with 4 songs that make the top 20 on your first album then by all means start judging. She's creative and that is rare in this world. Its refreshing to see something other than another Beyonce. Lady GaGa is da Vinci compared to her. When someone claims the best music video of all time is three people dancing to a plain backdrop - it becomes more clear that GaGa is great. Whether she's doing it for publicity or not, at least she has a brain and uses it. Shes not some dumb twat. She's an accomplished artist who puts her all into what she does. I never said she did it for charity...but all she wants to do is perform. Last year she played at clubs after her major shows to make money to pay for what she overspent. Marc Jacobs and Vera Wang seem to think she's decent but I guess they are just low brow whores too.

Sorry, a zero out of 10 from me. Limited talent and really no naural beauty from her

Yet despite that she's famous.
It really is all about the outfits.
Love the look (hate the singing).

She's the new Paris Hilton (working the paparazzi for a living).

Some people would also find your reference to it being a condition as insulting. No doubt you'll be quick to spring to their defence.

It's a person's right to have an opinion, and to voice it. Doubly so to not like her output.

She's creative and that is rare in this world.

No, it's not rare.

Its refreshing to see something other than another Beyonce. Lady GaGa is da Vinci compared to her.

So slagging off Lady GaGa is to be frowned upon, but the same of Beyonce not so much? Is that hypocrisy I smell in the air? Or perhaps people are just entitled to an opinion?

Shes not some dumb twat.

I wouldn't say she was dumb in the least. She's on the same level as Paris Hilton when it comes to the ability to create self-perpetuating publicity.

And to be clear my reference to twattery was not directed at her.

Marc Jacobs and Vera Wang seem to think she's decent but I guess they are just low brow whores too.

I wouldn't put Marc Jacobs and Vera Wang in the same league, particularly given that Gaga was noticeably absent front Wang's show. Moreover, I don't personally rate Jacobs; I find his collaboration with Steven Sprouse for LV to border on the repulsive. Naturally that undermines your whole argument on several levels, not the least because you've assumed that his has something to do with die hard "fashionistas". At the end of the day each to their own. If someone wants to run around in a costume they can. And others have every right to say that her arse is too fat for this outfit:

Or to say that this isn't art, but a successful attempt to gain publicity;

And her fans have every right to photograph themselves in these sunglasses;

In creating a character called Lady GaGa, she's set that persona up for just that. No one here has slagged off the real person of Stefani Germanotta. Just as many people can't stand Ziggy Stardust but love David Bowie.
