Elliott Smith - New Moon
Elliott Smith's death in 2003 was one of the saddest moments of the year for me. New Moon is a collection of previously unreleased materials recorded in the mid 90s, a time when he was recording more accoustic pop songs, as opposed to the orchestrated masterpeices of his late career. While his music has always had a lot of sadness, it is the happier/sparkling moments that are the most sobering, feeling his hope, but knowing his suicidal fate just a few years later.
El-P - I'll Sleep When You're Dead
Thundering drums, funky flourishes and synthesizer discord over bleak lyrics roughly spat in El's off kilter rhyming style. Guest collaborations with Cat Power, Mars Volta, Trent Reznor and unexpected splashings of El-P's jazz experimentation bring moments of space to his dense love-it-or-hate-it sound. I've been listening to the album for nearly a month straight, and I'm still craving more.
