Somewhere on Pitt St in a tall building in an overly airconditioned office...

Ian: 'Helen, here's a couple to do. Not much involved.'
Helen: 'Ok sure I'll get to it before lunch. Why is her last name Potts?'
Ian: 'She's one of them modern women that doesn't take on her partner's surname.'
Helen rolls eyes and focuses on the couples tax return.

Some 15 years later at Ms. Pott's first child to Mr. Pans parent teacher interview...

Teacher: 'Welcom Mrs. Pans'
Ms Potts: 'Its Ms Potts'
Teacher: 'oo but of course you are a modern women and use pots instead of pans!'

What's in a name for you ladies? would you take on your partners or keep your own?

I would take on the partner's... It would be nice to keep my surname so that it doesn't die out, but I'd rather be traditional.

Although... then there is the next question - what if it is a horrific sirname they have???!!! (i would keep my own... :s)

Lol I thought this thread was going to be about the "Love calculator"

I've always been quite traditional and determined to take my husband's.
However, I'm now kinda thinking that if career-wise, I'm known with my current surname, I may have to hyphenate professionally so that people still know that they've known me. If that makes sense.

If I were to get married...it would be an honour to take on his family name. I just hope it doesn't rhyme with my [future] childs name!

I think it depends on who you are i mean look at Katie Price and Peter Andrea she has taken his name but when in the "media eye" keeps price or even uses her stage name Jordan,

I am lucky enuff to have a name that will go with nearly anything (Charlotte) so I will be taking his when I find the right man that is, even if i become where my name if recognised by others i would just drop the last name and trade under my first name.

I think I would take my husband's name but if really doesn't go too well with my first name then I would hyphenate it.

Congratulations Samantha! I think it's an important part of a new chapter in life, taking on a different last name. But I respect women that have valid reasons like a reputation associated with their name which they choose to keep for their career.

I'd be intrigued to hear what guys think about this one. I for one wouldn't want to get married to someone who wasn't willing to take my surname. Marriage is a traditional institution and certain traditions come with it.
