We are a group of MBA students from Denmark and Canada who love fashion and were interested in finding out how people on the cutting edge of fashion find new and upcoming designers. We feel that people on the real cutting edge arent just looking at celebrities latest fashions or buying stuff from the major labels. How do cutting edge fashionistas find new, hot designers?

For me it's all about what I encounter on the Internet; I seldom randomly walk into a store with the intention of sampling their wares for the first time without prior referral from a friend.

What I do find, like, and buy, seldom comes from what celebrities are wearing or what a design house is doing (these days I even avoid some of my favourite designers). Instead I look for a lifestyle in their clothing. Does a particular collection, capsule, or item fit in with the lifestyle I live and, more importantly, want to live? If it does, and the quality is high, the cut is right, I won't care what the label reads.

same as daniel, i hardly hit the beat and visit major stores unless im particularly after something and when i do its somewhere in the city or burbs i rarley go to just to see what the local kwirky stores have. online, mags, friends, movies, music clips, just anything related to lifestyle more so than image like daniel has nicely pointed out.

For me it's also usually word of mouth, and random discoveries on the internet... if I had more time to flâneur around the city I'd probably wander into more little boutiques and the like.

Another worth mentioning are the new-gen type parades that run at the major fashion weeks - sometimes they give exposure to labels that (while usually already established) are otherwise not so well known by the mainstream.

Listen to word of mouth and you usually cant go wrong. There are some great deals for awesome styles and designs online. I havent been to a mall in 2 years. I buy most everything online. Your friends and colleagues usually will have some secrets and tips for finding great items.

I try to keep up, probably too much, with a number of resources on the web. I read a ton of interesting mags. Lately I discovered Dripbook.com, its a portfolio listing site for all types of artists and they have a category for fashion design and fashion styling. For other resources, take a look at the links list on my blog under "the industry"- http://epicenedream.blogspot.com.

I also like style.com, Lucky Magazine, and Interview Magazine for fashion.
