Why can't we see this in Australia?

Leverging off both your male peacock analogy from centuries past and GaS's young girls at Seven, it comes down to a biological survival of the fittest.

Confident, stylish and beautiful young people will continue to stand out and the rest of the playing field will have to rise to their level if they want to stay in the game.

As for cities vs. the suburbs... In Australia we have a huge land mass and the fourth cheapest fuel in the developed world, franchise stores are more populous in Australia than any where else in the world because of our low population density. But recent years have seen an accelerated move toward centralised urban lifestyles, less dependent on transport. Cities will increasingly become the cultural hubs of our society.

Looking at the way luxury goods and fashion have become a central part of Asia's cultural sphere, a more urban lifestyles means less money spent on pools for the backyard, less cars in the garage and no boat in the carport, but all the more reason to splurge on nice coats, bags and clothes.

I don't think Australians will leave their recreational lifestyles behind, but consumer trends towards 'experience' based spending (concert tickets, exclusive spa memberships, time-share like arrangements for luxury cars, holiday houses and boats - even handbags!) is going to become more and more common place.

Also, the big design houses in the northern hemisphere paying closer attention to consumer demand for trans-seasonal clothing will see fashion become more practical - tech fabrics, changing attitudes towards work and casual wear...

One day fashion will mean more to the average Australian than LV monogram and D&G diffusion, I promise =)
