I recently repaired a Fendi pearl necklace for a client who had no idea that the expensive necklace, which had broken almost immediately, was made with fake pearls. Admittedly they weren't bad fakes, they were a great weight and semi-irregular. But its absolutely not difficult to tell real from fakes. If you don't know, and you want to learn how its done, I don't mind showing anyone who wants to know some time...
[edit] and back to the original point - the client wanted them repaired because of the brand name on the necklace - obviously. People pay for the name. And certainly the quality of these fakes was far superior to what you'd find in a chainstore.
And PS I most definitely don't use fakes in my own work!
