I am helping my boss's wife in launching her very own Eco friendly label, Cascada, and we import scarves, throws, baby blankets etc made entirely in Bolivia, from Llama fibers. Llamas are unique animals because they are soft hooved, meaning they do not pack down their pastures and degrade the soil. Therefore, no fertilisers are used. Their hollow fibers have unmatched thermal qualities, and are warmer, lighter and far less likely to pill than wool or cashmere.
We work directly with the factory in Bolivia, and have put the time and money into ensuring it is completely eco friendly, using only recycled water and hydro-electric power. We also do not use any harsh chemicals or cleaners in our processing treatments.
In 2009, our Bolivian factory will receive the SA 8000 international certification for its products and work practices. This guarantees minimum standards in corporate responsibility of our factory's work practices, including:
-Minimum pay and conditions for all its workers
-Health and Occupational safety standards
On top of this, our factory is currently engaged in gaining WRAP certification (wrap.org.uk), and in 2010 our factory will have its international organic certification in place.
I am currently doing all the general admin for her upcoming media launch, such as sourcing recycled paper, finding caterers who use organic ingredients and generally ensuring every espect is kind to our environment. Please look at her website http://www.cascada.com.au for more information.
Phew.. it's amazing how much I've learnt about Llamas! And of course this day-to-day work on Cascada means I am much more conscious of what I do around my house! I hope this can all be rewarded =]
