Im in the process of trying to put together my winter wardrobe. I always end up buying too much and spending too much on everything I dont need. Does anyone have any ideas on what some good winter basics are that can be mixed and matched?

My first opinion would be to get two statement coats for winter. Trench coat and something else, fitted is always flattering. If u have enough hats and scarves you should be fine. A pair of boots i think now is mandatory but keep the look clean. Dont clutter with too much, although its winter i find alot of people thinks its acceptable to wear lots and lots of layers. Keep it practical.

Winter for me in 2008 is about classics. I'm avoiding the obvious fashion pieces for the time being and ensuring that I have the staples.
So far I've invested in:
* A pair of polo boots
* I've commissioned another pair. Come to just below the knee, a dark brown leather, hand made.
* Two classic, country styled jackets
* Two pairs of classic Winter pants (one in a dark grey). They're not the greatest of fits, so I'm having them altered to taper the legs down.
Like TootToot I agree that the most important pieces to get first are the coats. I adding one to my collection (a black, belted motorcycle style), but I have several from last Winter that I'm carrying over.
I think another good layer to consider are vests. You mightn't be a vest person, but they can be a great layer on those days which aren't cold enough, or to keep you warm when you're inside after you've removed a jacket or coat.

* Definitely a sharp tailored jacket and a gorgeous warm coat
* Tights and stockings
* A great pair of boots (or 10) - but if you can only get one pair, make them a classic shape, and comfortable - preferably wide enough at the calf to be able to wear them over jeans or pants, but not so wide that you can't wear them with skirts. Black or brown obviously are the most versatile.
Oh, and
* A warm, long-line cardigan or knited jacket. So easy to throw over anything and warm and comfortable as well.

And then lots of accessories to jazz everything up!! :D Scarves and hats and leather gloves... etc.

i really want to own the outfit that doctor cameron had on in house either last week or the week before. it was a grey vest suit with a short leeved blue blouse underneath, it was super hot. I cant find a picture (feel free all you smartys to find one please! lol) I am hoping that someone watched the episode so they know what i am talking about i dont sound like a total doosh!
Also as far as winter staples go i live in dresses with all different stockings, boots, flats, scarves and berets. I have 3 pairs of awesome driving gloves. I also invest in cute knits or tops (check out zimmerman for some great tops at the moment... i will buy a couple when i eventually have money) good jeans are a must. I believe personally that you should invest in one or 2 classic coats and that way you dont HAVE to purchase any for a couple of seasons. I have a great cream leather knee length trench, and a black baby doll knee length coat plus a couple of little blazer style jackets. I personally prefer to spend my money on dresses and tops and general peices than buying jackets and coats every year!

Was it the episode with the humanitarian Doctor saving kids in Africa? Because if so I think I recall her wearing a cute outfit like that...

iv jsut bought an awesome black hugo boss trench (the inside is quilted! yum!) which is my big buy of the season, but i think this winter im going be wearing more coats- mainly my beige leather armani and this great vintage grey coat my mom bought when she was 20 in london- and boots. i tend to be a dresses and stockings girl too, and i love scarves (my neck gets cold easily and i am forever loosing my voice) and hats... oh and my long knits to lounge around in (and fluffy slippers for when i'm at home!)

I just bought a new pair of tights for work. Now am looking for some new boots, because my other ones are pretty old now although I still love them heaps.
