No way! there are so many celebs out there who are fahion disasters and they wear expensive labels. Its ridiculous how some people assume that you need money to be fashionable.
fashions all about context. material value plays into it, but its more important that you've thought out whatever you're wearing---ie making sure it fits, using nice color combination, working with your body type, etc. To be blunt, sometimes a person's best fashion investment can be something as simple as losing some weight (or gaining it)---or working on some physical feature. Just look at Michelle Ob-arms-a.
I think it's all about mix & match. There are some great expensive and quality things around, however you can get some good stuff on the high street (like Top Shop London or Zara..). Nevertheless it is true that Chanel bag is for life and some bag you buy on a high street is just for that "season".

I agree with Justina. I think it's a matter mixing n matching to fit who you are. For me, fashionable means being comfortable with your own style, what you have on can be from Zara or some expensive label.
The price of an item is simply determined by what people are willing to pay. The production cost of a famous brand watch is about 10$, but the price tag is around 2.500 $. You get the same quality watch from Casio for a fraction of that. Buy a Lacoste polo tshirt, (45$?), I know a store that sells the exact same shirt made in the exact same quality in the same factory for 6.32$. The price is not calculated based on costs, it's made regarding the perceived desireabilty of the item.
