I have heard that lunges exercise is good for legs. I have got fats around my legs and i guess i must practice this exercise to burn those fats.
Any suggestions?

Lunges are usually done more as a muscle toning excercise. It can help with some fat burning but will not be as effective.

I would suggest cardio based workouts to burn the fat. Steady speeds of running/jogging will help. It depends on the body but a steady speed would be something around 10-12 km per hour (running 1km every 5 minutes). Cycling, cross trainer, rollerblading, dancing are other options.

When it comes to fat burning, you cannot reduce it in one specific area but will need to reduce it as a whole body. You can however muscle develop in one area and make that area appear tighter but the fat will be still there.

i use a leg press for my legs at the gym and it works awesomely and gives you a nice bum too! squats are awesome too, and sprints are great for fat loss. I have done intervals of 40 seconds sprinting as fast as you can and then 20 rest, for 30 minutes, which is an absolute killer!

okay thanks a lot for the awareness. I am going to try squats now, can squats be done at home without any trainer?

Is squat training for fat burning? I've always thought it was for buttock and leg muscle developing and strength work.

pretty much most weights will burn fat. the whole idea that only cardio burns fat it a bit of a myth...its not really that clean cut

Now I'm getting confused because I've always thought weights do create extra bulk due to muscles.

But I have a question. A friend of mine has bulky legs due to muscles (not fat). She wanted to reduce her muscles into a more slender figure. She does a lot of weights so I told her to do cardio to break the muscle tissues but after this thread, I'm unsure.

I was also thinking about building her core strength to compensate for the muscle reduction.

Which workouts would break down muscle tissues on her leg area into a more slender figure?

its pretty hard to build chunky muscles as a chick unless you're pumping iron all day every day...or if you are genetically predisposed like your friend...normally, low weight/high rep will get you slender muscles, while high weight/low rep will give you chunky boy muscles.

has she tried pilates? running/sprinting/etc might work, though she should talk to a trainer and go very very easy on the weights, if at all. my little sister has this problem and so does no weights on her legs at all, and just does cardio + zumba/boxing/running/pilates/etc (when she can be bothered)

Thanks for the responses. =)

Pilate is a good idea; it would help her core strength too. She went overseas to Hong Kong (she's from HK) and saw her trainer and they literally looked at her thighs, shook their heads and said "Oh no! No good!" (However most HK women are petite and slender/no muscle tones at all. I actually think her legs are perfect.) She does a lot of weights. I'm guessing leg wise that she has been doing the usual lunges, leg curler, leg press type of workouts.

I've advised her to run at a steady jogging pace for a decent duration (8, 10 or 12km per hour, depending on her level). Since she loves the weights and never really touch cardio, she may not have developed the stamina nor agility nor motivation for running/cross training/spin so in which case, pilates may be an alternative option.
