Name the usual reason behind purchasing specific clothing brands? I.e. style, function quality, fit etc.

A combination of everything for me.

the heritage behind the label matters to me as well. also, the work (thought/design/creation) put into the products/collection.

Agreed, a brand's heritage can be a major influence for me, particularly when perusing a British brand's wares.

For me, it isn't about the designer themselves, but all of the qualities that you listed. It simply comes down to the fact that some brands are going to be of better quality than others.

Here is how I see it: If there is a specific piece that I am looking for, I think about whether it is more of a uberfashionable piece that won't work in two years, or something that I can wear the rest of my life.

For example, if I was really keen on buying a pair of neon-colored ray ban style sun glasses, I'm pretty sure that I won't want to wear them when I'm 30. So, I'll go to Forever21 and get a cute pair of them for 12 bucks. Good deal, but they'll probably look beat up within a few years.

On the other hand, if I was interested in buying a wool winter double breasted coat, I know I could wear such a classic piece for the rest of my life. So I dole out the extra cash to buy a high quality, warm, and long lasting coat from a high-end designer.

Love too!

As for me, I look to the quality of manufacturing; example, what is the thread count of a shirt I'm looking at, and especially the stitching! Mark my words...if there is a loose thread/stitch anywhere on the garment...either look at another or walk-away.

Fit is also critical; examples such as Ralph Lauren, Geoffery Bean, Brooks Bros, and especially Piere Cardin are worth every penny spent; whereas, if one wants to stay trendy with any make-shift resort wear, remember, that's exactly what you're buying.

So many folks here make excellent points! Glad to be here! Oh sorry! Just one more thing...Asha makes a great point vis-a-vie brand heritage especially when looking at high end leather goods. However, it is exactly those brands that give the clue of trouble or manufacturing difficulties. Thank you.

After reading this thread I realised I'm superficial when it comes to fashion.

Style and the look seems to be my priority even over comfort and durability. I hate to say it but being honest, apart from the function of visual appearance, function would be my least priority (i.e. if an item has pockets, water-proof or even keeps me warm). But in this case I change looks all the time and would rather buy something (even if it is a fad) item that is hot for one week and buy new items for another week rather than buy a classic and wear it for too long. Probably because I get bored too quickly with fashion.

I would say the quality of the item, the design concept coming from a specific design house, and the ingenious looks created by these specific people. All the rest tend to try to emulate the masters. When I can afford it, I always purchase straight from the designer.
