how tall do you have to be to pull off trench coats?
and whats the ideal length of the coat? where should it end?
i was trying on a trench at barneys and the length reaches mid thigh (about 4-5 inches above the knee), im only 5'6 though
the fit is good and all but i dont want the coat to eat me up and make me look shorter than i already am

If you only had a Height of 5'6" Better not to wear trench coat because you look shorty in that coat. Better to wear normal size of jackets.

Agreed you have to be tall, but it also depends on the cut of the trench coat. To get away with a classic cut I think you have to be somewhere around the 6 foot mark. But if you're going a slim-cut trench, that breaks closer to the knees than the ankle you can afford to wear one at a shorter height.

Given you're 5'6" I'd say go for the modern break (which you tried on) over the traditional break. Also consider a trench coat that does a modern, single breast over a double breast. The lower break of the neckline should add some visual inches to your height.

short/cut off trenches look really great on shorter people.
i'm 5'7" so reckon with heels I can pull off a full length one, but cropped 'mini-trenches' look great because they're a bit more casual as well.
Check this one out, not exactly a classic trench but pretty nice all the same.

lovin Anne Hathaway's fav trench.
Anyone know any good look-alikes with the faded color towards the bottom look. It's a Burberry.

i have a trench coat obsession- i have a relitively long black hugo boss one which i wear with heels (im 5'5= tiny). I have a classic burberry trench whihc i wear a bit with everything, and a vintage grey trench of my moms which gets worn with boots. Ive got a few others too i think, and because i'm always in heels the height doesnt bother me, but i would say go for a slim one if you're scared of that..

i love them.
I prefer the ones that aren't so long. If i was taller maybe.
But they are great with high heel boots or just high heels.

If your short this is not a great coat for you. However you can taylor it. Just have it above the knee and your be fine. :-)
