hey guys,

I am getting a new watch for christmas and I have been looking at mens watches. I really like that masculine meets feminie look and the larger watch on the tiny wrist... what does everyone else think? do you think this style will stay in for a while? is there any particular style of watch I should be leabing towards???

Thanks!

depends on how much you are spending ;) the more you spend, the longer the watch should last. if you want an everyday wathch, and tend to work on the computer, make sure its something that gives your wrist flexibility, otherwise you will find yourself taking it off a lot. all my watches tend to be quite classic. oh and one more thing, make sure its water proof, not water resistant, if you leave it on when washing your hands etc. if you're gonna spend a lot, a brand that is known for making watches is generally going to be better quality than a fashion brand. Swiss movement is a must. oh and i wouldnt go for a larger watch if youre the kind of person that may bang it around :P i have smashed many watches. post some pictures of what you're looking at though :)

thank you ruru thats very helpful! I dont have as large of budget as i would dreamt of, but thats ok I will find something brilliant none of the less. At the moment I have been looking at the Gucci and Bvlgari ones but I still have to do some shopping around, see if I can pick up a bargain from last season, and shop a bit with mum when I get back to melbourne!

I agree about the larger one banging around... but I just like the look so much more! lol. Although I dont want one TOO big otherwise it will just date straight away... it still has to be able to be worn on dressy occasions and look fabulous!

I've got a crazy collection of watches. If you're not looking Swiss, Japanese is the next best. I wouldn't go anywhere else, though have always personally tended to those with Swiss workings.

I'd also steer clear of label watches - most of them are actually designed by Fossil and rebranded for the various fashion houses.

If you're spending lots make sure it's an investment piece.

From what I own;
Omega make some great quality, reliable watches. But their designs have been reasonably generic of late. There might be some room here for a good vintage piece with some history behind it.

Girard-Perregaux - an amazing investment piece. I picked one up dead cheap off eBay because they're seriously undervalued in Australia. They've been making watches since the 1700s, and are one of the oldest watchmakers in the world. Quality and elegance.

TAG Heuer - you could get yourself a piece such as the Monaco? They're quite bulky, and can actually hurt. So don't impulse buy, try it on and make sure you're aware of the weight.

From what I want;
Raymond Weil make some brilliant watches, and do a very masculine finish. Others include Breitling, Audemars Piguet, and Baume et Mercier. I've never owned one, but I've also heard good things about Maurice Lacroix.

If you're really looking for an investment piece (anything $1k+) then you should try and get your hands on Vanity Fair's biennial watch magazine 'On Time' (written by Nick Foulkes, and believe me Nick knows his stuff).

More thoughts: avoid Rolex.

lol thanks Daniel, i just bought a rolex - but i knwo what you mean, they look very "mature" (or as my sister says it - old woman watch) and unless you can get a good one (they start at $4000ish) they look pretty ewww.. having said that, i love mine to pieces, and when snotty shop assistants see it they tend to act nicer to you..

tags are beautiful, as are ramond weils- and raymond weil has some nice square face guys watches that you could get away with. breitlings are lovely but pretty pricey. for a classic timepice, cartier is beautiful as well, but also bloody expensive! and dont discount buying a 2nd hand classic/vintage as often they are well looked after and loved, in mint condition.

about the fossil thing, i used to work for a company which sold watches and sunglasses, and Daneil is right, fossil make the majority of brand-name watches, including d&g, burberry, etc - not worth your money!
