An Interview with Lloyd Boston – Style editor on the Today show, spokesperson for Jones New York and author and illustrator of Before You Put That On: 365 Daily Tips for Her.

What are some must-haves for spring?
A great trench in a statement-making fabric or color is a key item this season. Jones New York has a fabulous metallic trench, but you can also find styles in slick synthetics like patent leather or even white linen in most stores. It will add impact to any closet.

I also love the clutch bag as an alternative to the 30-gallon hobo bag women have been toting around. A long and lean style, whether it’s vintage or brand new, looks ladylike, and it will force you to pare down the amount of junk you carry around.

Coco Chanel said it best: “Take one thing off before you leave the house.” Women tend to over-accessorize. Part of it is emotional clutter – the bracelet you got for your anniversary, the ring you got for your birthday. And then there are the trends piled high on top of that. Keep things clean and understated.

Women tend to try and get dressed up every single day. You can’t look superstylish every day of the year. It’s exhausting, and it will start to reflect in your appearance. Take the day off and sport jeans or go without makeup for the day. Dressing up will start to feel special again.

Leggings are back again for spring. Yea or nay?
If you couldn’t wear them the first time around, don’t wear them this time. Leggings were originally designed for dancers, for women with long and lean figures. You don’t have to wear every single trend – especially if some of them don’t look good on you.

Flats or heels for spring?
I love flats for the new season. There are so many options at so many price points right now. Designer shoe companies that specialize in stilettos are now even offering chic flats. You can find great styles in vintage stores as well – just resole them, and you’ll have a pair of shoes that nobody else will be wearing.

Late one Oxford night Daniel P Dykes set about creating a fashion publication that would go someway to being an arbiter on fashion as it appeals to the emerging power generations: those who don't remember a world without the Internet and for whom work plays second fiddle to pleasure. And so Fashionising.com was born as a publication for those who were focussed not just on fashion's trends, but on society's too, and how those trends could all go to heighten the art of living. Hence, Daniel sees a future where, for those young at heart, both fashion and style are grounded in traditional quality, but with a youthful, sensualised edge. Daniel is Fashionising.com's Editor in Chief and Chairman.
