And today’s landmark legal victory goes to… (drumroll)… Louis Vuitton (LVMH), for making eBay cough up the Euros.
40 million Euros to be exact.
The online sales of fake products cost designer labels a reputed $30 billion a year, and with eBay being the biggest online auction site the difference will be more than negligible.
But while it seems reasonable and logical that Ebay could be found at fault for allowing the sale of counterfeit designer goods, what about real ones? Ebay was also ordered to cease sales of fragrances and cosmetics from brands under the LVMH banner – including Christian Dior, Kenzo, Givenchy and Guerlain – or face sizeable fines. Ebay claim they will fight the ruling, calling it anti-competitive.
What do you think? Should Ebay allow users to sell genuine designer fragrances, against the wishes of fashion houses like LVMH?
