While the face of the fast fashion scene in Australia has rapidly changed in 2011 courtesy of the opening of Zara and impending opening of Topshop in Melbourne, changes to the medium-high and high-end of the market have gone relatively unnoticed. But changes are certainly afoot.
Though we’ve heard many a rumour about the intention of European designer brands to set up shop here (we’ll have more on that later), only one designer is confirmed so far: Paul Smith.
Those in Melbourne with a taste of all things Paul Smith will know that his wares are few and far between in the city and across Australia. Department store David Jones certainly has an offering, and Melbourne used to be the home of Paul Smith concept store Tenfold. All that will change with the opening of Paul Smith’s first Australian store on Melbourne’s Collins Street.
British fashion retailer Paul Smith is to establish its first Australian store in Melbourne, as international chains continue to make their mark on the local market.
The retailer, which sells designer menswear, has secured a lease at the Paris end of Melbourne’s Collins Street.
“Other international retailers who have recently secured flagship stores in Melbourne’s CBD include Zara, Swarovski and Thomas Pink,” Cookes says.
Paul Smith’s first Australian store is set to open its Melbourne doors in 2012.
