The New Penthouse Magazine

Written by Daniel P Dykes on 21.02.07

Penthouse Magazine. Not really an expected topic for our blog, is it? But let us explain.

Several years ago a lot of men's magazines changed tack - it seems that men really had read Playboy solely for the articles, as they turned away in droves to read the likes of GQ and Maxim. Clearly, the centrefolds weren't doing it for them.

So finally, and perhaps better late than never, Penthouse Magazine has followed suit, the fruition of which you'll see (or not) in the US March issue. How did they achieve the change? By turning to their competition and poaching Mark Healy from the men's fashion bible that is GQ.

As more and more old school brands try to reinvent themselves as lifestyle options, we're going to see a lot of them turning to the fashion magazines we ourselves have turned to for years on end.

Armani sale - not your usual sale

Written by Daniel P Dykes on 20.02.07

With tongue firmly planted in our cheek, we've placed this story in the sales category. Yes, there's an Armani sale going on. But don't expect any big discounts, and don't expect to drop any less than somewhere in the hundreds of millions.

Because when we say Armani sale, we mean the entire company.

Developed a name for yourself and want to get some free swag? Well you can cross Sir Paul Smith and his lines off your list - he has a policy to never give out freebies.

"We've been dressing musicians and celebrities for many years, but they always buy the clothes; we don't give clothes away. That's our policy. Not because of meanness, but because it sets the rule," Smith says, pointing out the obvious fact that, "They're wealthier than most of the [other] customers."

Fashion Hoax - Clever Ways To Get Publicity

Written by Tania Braukamper on 09.02.07

When "Nicolae and Elisabeta Petrescu" - an odd pair supposedly from Romania - went cruising around New York Fashion Week with their fluffy cat Leo and rose-petal throwing cohorts, there were plenty of curious whispers rippling through both the real and online worlds. The hoax has now been revealed, and what a clever way to spin publicity without splashing the cash.

Louis Vuitton buys Aston Martin

Written by Daniel P Dykes on 01.02.07

We approach this news with trepidation. LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton SA, the rather long-named luxury goods consortium, has moved into a new field - sports cars.

The company has placed the highest bid for British car company Aston Martin, makers or some of the sexiest cars to grace our roads and to be driven by Ian Fleming's James Bond.

Seemingly an innocuous sale, and while LVMH has handled its brands well in the past, the idea of a Louis Vuitton monogrammed Aston Martin positively scares us. Chavs on the other hand are rejoicing.

Profile Anna Wintour

Written by Daniel P Dykes on 01.02.07

Part myth is the best way to describe her. In fact, our grandchildren might not even believe us when she say she existed. But her impact on the fashion industry is undeniable, even if you believe she hasn't influenced a single thing you're wearing (she has) you can't deny her ability to have the industry obsessing about her proves the point.

In the New York Times today, Cathy Horyn has profiled Anna Wintour, the editor of US Vogue. It's an interesting perspective, a fantastically written prose (for want of a better term) and well worth your time.

And to millions of people to whom her power is less real... she is also a symbol: the small cross-armed woman in the front row, inscrutable behind her dark glasses and self-protecting English bob, her effect equal parts terrifying and calm, like the center of the storm she has dominated for 19 years.
And of her role in the industry;
In recent years she has gone beyond the editorial domain and involved herself in the placement of designers at fashion houses. Her efforts fall across a spectrum of involvement, from outright pitching the name of a person she likes to a chief executive, to putting her weight behind a pending decision, to effectively make a marriage.

Burberry May Lose Royal Warrant

Written by Daniel P Dykes on 16.01.07

There's a right row brewing over the decision by Burberry to close their Treorchy factory in Wales and shift the jobs elsewhere. In 2007, the loss of jobs for cheaper labour is almost to be expected. But when a great British brand seems to abandon Great Britain, you have to wonder whether it's a case of cutting off their nose to spite their face.

While it has been confirmed that the 300 jobs are heading overseas, those now set firmly against Burberry are seemingly doing their best to damage the brand.
