There are certain things you expect of an Alannah Hill collection, and she’s never one to under-deliver. There will be colour, there will be lace, there will be flowers – gardens of them – and a frolic through some vintage days of yore, updated with bucketloads of modern whimsy and Hill’s own established sense of quirk. And while her autumn / winter 2013 collection doesn’t exactly head down unchartered territory, it does deliver up the reliable Alannah Hill aesthetic, at times in unexpectedly sophisticated ways.
A rose-print sheath dress, styled with all-black accessories, feels decidedly modern – almost conservative. It’s a piece that’d take you from office to after-work socialising with ease. Meanwhile, Hill’s other starring pieces are the ones that play with perfect timeliness to the revival of ’60s fashion: swing-cut cropped coats in bright yellow and baby blue, a plaid mini, and a paisley second-skin top clashed against a bright green skirt.
