Inspired by a film inspired by a classic novel, Brooks Brothers’ Gatsby collection is based on the costuming in Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming The Great Gatsby adaptation. Whether you choose to think of such collections as cashing in, or as cleverly catering to a demand that’s arising from a renewed, shared interest in an era inspired by big-screen hype, isn’t so much the question. What’s more important is how well Brooks Brothers have adapted the costumes to suit the needs and desires of the modern male.
And in that, they’ve done well.
As an overall look, each outfit comes together as a modern interpretation of dapper 1920’s dressing – and yet as individual pieces, nothing is far removed from the usual Brooks Brothers fare. The men’s suits manifest in trim, contemporary cuts, without any of the high waists and boxy shoulders that would have defined them in the original era. From a linen summer suit in pale pink, to striped Regatta blazers or shawl-neck cardigan, nothing is too little or too much.
