The Soviet cultural references giving way to her own vision of Americana, Ulyana Sergeenko’s haute couture spring 2013 collection channeled everything from Scarlett O’Hara to Huckleberry Finn. Delving into the great American story book gave Sergeenko plenty of room for drama and whimsy, in her world where embroidery embellishes everything from romantic blouses to sunglasses, where a purposefully frayed straw hat and slingshot add boyish charm to an otherwise delicate outfit, or where a parasol and bustle find new relevance for the modern woman.
Photographed by Nick Sushkevich against a lavish backdrop, Sergeenko’s couture look book throws the beauty of the collection into new light, even as it’s filled with novelty items and street-style attention grabbers. From itsy-bitsy peasant playsuits to sweeping capes and floor-length ruffled gowns, Sergeenko’s pieces aren’t generally what women want to wear every day, but they are what many women dream of wearing non the less.
