The myths and legends surrounding Cleopatra are an endless source of fascination. Her seductiveness, her power over men, her political prowess. Depending on the historical accounts, though, she was either a beauty born or a beauty made. Those who claim the latter say she presented herself as a larger-than-life Goddess incarnate, always making grand entrances and donning lavish clothing and makeup. Here was a woman who knew the transformative power of dress.

We may not know exactly what the Egyptian Queen looked like, but we have a cliche image of her in our minds that popular culture has created. It’s the Elizabeth Taylor black fringed hair and kohl eyeliner, the full lips and seductive stares. That’s what’s conveyed, beautifully and powerfully and with a modern twist, in this shoot by photographer Marley Kate.

Though this Cleopatra, Julia Kravets, is at times raven-haired, at times blonde, she’s instantly recognisable. Photographed for Vice Style, you can view more at the gallery above.

Some people's wardrobes are about a small selection of pieces that all fit within one aesthetic - Tania Braukamper isn't such a person. With a wardrobe that spans three different rooms, her approach to fashion is a mixture of current-season key pieces mixed with vintage finds she's sourced on innumerous shopping trips around the world's more cultured capitals. Despite a disparate approach to shopping, Tania is adamant that the key to mixing vintage with new season is to stick to key looks and colours that work for oneself. And it's a theory that she works into her writing for Fashionising.com, where she serves as the publication's Editor.
