V Magazine’s latest issue is full of fashion models, and they’re celebrating the fact big time. Wait up – are models in a magazine something unusual? For V, typically one to plaster the likes of Lady Gaga, Beyonce or Brad Pitt on a cover, perhaps. This issue has been dubbed The Model Issue and it’s celebrating the diversity of the model pack currently gracing our runways, campaigns, and print titles. It’s also a kind of snapshot – a one-issue time capsule – of who is defining the modelling world right now.
In a multi-page spread, V’s 74th issue showcases the top talents from the handful of reining model agencies. Amoungst those pages you’ll find nearly every big-name model you can care to think of, from the Victoria’s Secret angel pack to the fresh faces on the block. How they’re presented differs vastly, too: at one end of the spectrum is Women’s series of candid street style snaps, at the other is Ford’s playboy-esque naked polaroids.
In the accompanying text the agencies respond to questions about who their biggest names are right now, who their most promising new talents are, and what makes them as an agency special. On some things there’s a general consensus. All agree that the rise of social media, and the move to model-as-celebrity, are the biggest changes to the industry in recent years.
