Alexander Wang Spring/Summer 2010: NYFW

Written by Tania Braukamper

It wasn't so long ago that Alexander Wang injected a high dosage of glamour into grunge, and helped spawn a street trend of high fashion mixed with ripped stockings and boyfriend shirts. Now, with his Spring/Summer 2010 collection at New York Fashion Week, Wang has turned his hand to sportswear; transfusing it with that same understated glam-factor that he does so well.

Elements of Wang's collection scream American football, from round accentuated shoulders (feminised by sheer fabrics and soft fluffy knits), to the cutaway knee-high socks. Sports stripes, racer-back crop tops, hooded jackets, and sweat shirts complete with cutaway detailing all contribute to the theme of the collection. Wang also finds new ways to interpret Winter's leather trend, applying it to lace-up leather shorts, tops, and leather head pieces with chin straps.

While Wang's collection incorporates softer elements and ultimately achieves a new level of femininity, it steers well clear of cheerleader - rather playing to a tomboy aesthetic of tough, but pretty.

This is one collection that will influence street trends, big time. Before we know it high-street chains everywhere will be filling their shelves with baseball jackets, crop tops and sexed-up sports socks. There is some finesse required to pull off the look like one of the models on Wang's runway; a healthy dose of muscle tone and a sun-kissed tan will certainly help. Moreover, it's got to be effortless to be chic. As for Wang, we believe it's a step in the right direction to ensuring his continued influence over the 2010 fashion scene.

There aren't too many alpha-females out there and, though she might deny it, Tania Braukamper certainly exudes their qualities. A keen eye, a focused approach, and a wardrobe spanning three rooms have made her one of the savviest of dressers. But it's not all couture for Tania, earning her fashionista credentials she'll frequently be seen on the town in a one-off, vintage dress and a pair of Gucci heels.

She says: Vintage will never go out of style
We say: Does that include vintage 80s?
