Amazons rise, and rise again

There was an unmistakable spike in 2009, a spike in editorials of a particular theme. It was a culmination of fashion and film: the film was Where The Wild Things Are and the fashion was a trend in all things fierce and Warrior like. Since then we’ve had a long enough break from the theme to approach it with fresh eyes; and so has photographer Julia Kiecksee. Her shoot Rise Of The Amazons brings the warrior motifs away from their heavily embellished straps and spikes of 2009 and into a softer, more minimal interpretation for 2011. It’s really a combination of the hair, makeup, poses and props that puts the primal spin on it while the clothing, styled by Ann-Kathrin Bruns, stays freshly modern.

The shoot stars models Diara Sow, Sabrina Ruiz and Helen Schoepf.

Some people's wardrobes are about a small selection of pieces that all fit within one aesthetic - Tania Braukamper isn't such a person. With a wardrobe that spans three different rooms, her approach to fashion is a mixture of current-season key pieces mixed with vintage finds she's sourced on innumerous shopping trips around the world's more cultured capitals. Despite a disparate approach to shopping, Tania is adamant that the key to mixing vintage with new season is to stick to key looks and colours that work for oneself. And it's a theory that she works into her writing for, where she serves as the publication's Editor.
