Judging the Debut competition at Fashion Exposed is difficult on a several levels. It goes without saying that each label has put in bucketloads of hard work just to get where they are, so each should be applauded. Secondly, it can be a bit like someone asking you to pick a favourite movie: how do you compare a comedy with a drama, an action-packed sci-fi flick full of giant robots with a quirky art-house piece brimming with imagination? If you can forgive my lame film analogy for a minute, you’ll see what I’m getting at. Each label is unique, and brings something different into the equation be it beautiful construction, innovation in materials, or utter saleability. On Sunday that’s what the Debut judges were again faced with – and while many of the labels were impressive, only one in each category could come out on top.
So without further ado I can now announce the Melbourne 2010 Debut competition winners:
Apparel: Francz by Geoffrey Haining
Accessories: Afterglow
Avant Garde: Anna Blease
