A pleated skirt can have a short, filppy connotation: it can be a tennis skirt. A tartan too-tiny thing that’s more high-school than high-land. A cheerleader skirt. But as you shall know by now that’s not what 2011’s pleat trend is all about and, in fact, if there’s any rule at all to 2011’s pleats it’s that they shalt not be any of the above. Therein lies the key to 2011’s pleats: they can be 70s glamour or 20s understatement, a modern interpretation or a classic one – but they’re also fine pleats not wide ones, and short hems not mini ones. Here’s an example of a glamorous, long-hemmed piece that perfectly typifies the mood of the trend in 2011: worn by Doutzen Kroes in a campaign for Neiman Marcus.
