Falling flat: Arizona Muse & Hedi Slimane

There’s no substitute for feeling, for spark. It doesn’t matter if what you’re producing is an artwork or a fashion shoot intended to sell clothing, in the end it’s most successful if it makes the viewer feel something.

Beyond a doubt Arizona Muse has been one of the ‘it’ models of the year. But the pairing of Muse and Hedi Slimane in this shoot may as well be the pairing of Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp in The Tourist: brilliant big names, flat final product. Slimane’s photography is effective, Muse is stunning as always, the styling is luxurious; but with the volume of scanned magazine editorials hitting the internet each day and the voraciousness with which fashion is consumed, it simply needs a little something extra to make it stand out.

And that’s just the state of things. Nudity for its own sake is no longer newsworthy. Big names alone are not enough. You need a unique concept, breathtaking execution, styling that well and truly inspires, or an indefinable quality that infects you with it’s mood. Without that the spark is simply not there. It’s a simple statement of fact: with more photoshoots accessible than ever, the bar has been raised.

Of course, you may feel otherwise about Arizona Muse‘ shoot for Vogue Russia. You can click on the thumbnails above to view it all and decide for yourself.

Some people's wardrobes are about a small selection of pieces that all fit within one aesthetic - Tania Braukamper isn't such a person. With a wardrobe that spans three different rooms, her approach to fashion is a mixture of current-season key pieces mixed with vintage finds she's sourced on innumerous shopping trips around the world's more cultured capitals. Despite a disparate approach to shopping, Tania is adamant that the key to mixing vintage with new season is to stick to key looks and colours that work for oneself. And it's a theory that she works into her writing for Fashionising.com, where she serves as the publication's Editor.
