Just as we don’t expect to see swimwear photographed in black and white, we don’t expect to see a re-imagining of flapper fashion set amongst clouds of dirt. The glamour and excesses of the flapper girl have little place amongst the grit of nature. But it’s amongst such a setting that you’ll find you’ll find model Ginta Lapina as, amongst other things, she dons Gucci’s take on the style for La Rivière Sans Retour.
Which is something of an ironic title for the shoot. Dominated by Lapina’s curled, peroxide blonde bob with a bold red lip to compliment, it is a photo shoot rooted in vintage recreationist fashion. Why then name the photo shoot The River of No Return? After all everything in it, from the vintage swimwear to the closing fur, is featured solely by way of a return. Perhaps the title is a commentary on the fact that having once been privy to such great looks, we’re unwilling to return to a point where we no longer indulge in them. Or perhaps, as is more likely to be case, the shoot’s copywriter simply thought it was a cool title.
