Whether it’s involuntary or willing, there is a severity in Helmut Newton‘s work that seizes the attention of viewers, thrusting them into a world acute with eroticism. A commanding equilibrium of severity and sensuality, the subjects of his images are powerful, sharp and austere – much like the high contrast characteristic of Helmut Newton’s work, making him a fashion household name and a ground breaking standard that continues to inspire.
In a shoot for GQ Spain, Sergi Pons pays homage to Newton’s body of work with provocatively salient black and white effigies of a bob haired Noemi Lenoir. Thorny metals and long spiked heels contradict the curves of bare skin and the filmy fabrics of lingerie, bringing to blinding light the allure of constraint. The styling is approached with superlative precision, blending menswear, lingerie and leather, offset by Lenoir’s compelling energy to result in a concurrent contemporary series of stunning images that never stray from the spirit of the prototype.
