Body heat gushing out the cheeks, heartbeat running at a thousand miles and a perspiring body – exercising is painful for some and uplifting for others. But newsflash – it’s been upgraded to a la mode status.
Exercising and fashion have a relationship that isn’t known to many. Just as sweat glands get an undue attention after an hour-long power walk, you wouldn’t expect the cut, fabric and texture of your gym gear getting a similar appeal. Unless you step out of hair and make-up and prep up your inner gym enthusiast for a photo shoot.
Tastefully snapped by Cecilia Austin, this editorial is as close as you’d get to see style and sport in the same room. Well, unless you’re at Wimbledon watching all the women’s matches. But even that has its dull moments.
Model Jennifer Humphrey’s anxious stance and mildly aggressive facial expressions are enough to de-motivate a non-gym goer. But that’s where the fashion comes in. The ironical blend of silk scarves and crystal-studded heels with lycra tights and cotton camisoles illustrates the sharp styling of this shoot. Clean prints, pale colours and very basic clothes are all part of this exercise regime, but the accompanying accessories are hardcore. Kettle ball, dumbbell, trapeze rope, skipping rope and boxing gloves haven’t been paid mercy either.
The flicking ponytail and wheeling fabric capture the precision of the surrounding geometric shapes. Plus, the motion and attitude of this workout is intense enough to make the dummy boxing face stoop in shame.
Though I’m uncertain about the silk scarf being used as a face towel.
