Madam Virtue & Co. Spring 2009; MSFW

Written by Daniel P Dykes

While events such as tonight's official catwalk may garner the most attention, fashion in Melbourne is best consumed on the city's streets and down it's lane-ways (a fact that Colonial First State remains selectively ignorant of). So it was that, with the MSFW (Melbourne Spring Fashion Week) opening party out of the way, I headed to the oft overlooked Crossley Street for the Spring / Summer launch of Madam Virtue & Co. couture collection.

Somewhat subdued in its tonality for a Spring/Summer collection, the initial pieces to grace the catwalk, replete with iconography such as a single frame from the Marilyn Diptych, belied an undertone of frivolity. While quality oozes from each piece, and believe me when I say that photos simply cannot do them justice, never should you get the sense that this is a collection taking itself too seriously.

That fact is further highlighted in the pieces' structures; while shapes abound, they are never architectural, rather relying on loose curves that heighten the feminine qualities.

And quality is just the right word to use. While statement jewelery pieces were eye catching, it was the intricate embellishment of the show's latter dresses (such as this striking two-tone piece) that charged the rooms atmosphere.

Madam Virtue & Co. can be found at 5 Crossley Street in Melbourne, while you can see more pictures from the collection by clicking on the thumbnails below.
