From the very beginning of the fourth of the official catwalks held during 2009's Melbourne Spring Fashion Week (MSFW) there was a seemingly collective effort for most of the labels to lean towards one of the this year's more subtle trends fashion year; the tribal nomad. The trend, which has seen a very steady following in menswear recent years courtesy of labels such as Damir Doma and Julius, was reinterpreted into women's wear.
In a parade that comprised labels Alpha 60, Antipodium, Arnsdorf, Fat, Gary Bigieni, Obus and TV, flowing garments in blousons, skirts, dresses and jumpsuits came in shades of sand, camel, ivory, off white and of course the obligatory black.
Details such as cutaway pieces, extra straps, perforated panels and fringes gave a brand-specific stamp to the organic feel of the trend. The catwalk also featured a strong use of jewel coloured fabrics, particularly in deep purple with splashes of bright yellow and pink, reserved for more celebratory-specific pieces.
Also seen was a a reinterpretation of early 90's biker chic by Antipodium, though a motley show by Fat and TV featuring oversized prints and patterns, mostly black-based, proved more interesting. But as motley as it was, it may have a rightfully reminder of what Melbourne fashion has become.
