Paul Smith Spring/Summer 2010: LFW

Written by Tania Braukamper

Plaids, pocket handkerchiefs, and clashing prints. As Paul Smith's Spring/Summer 2010 collection paraded the runway at London Fashion Week, it made a smooth - if slightly strange - transition from Female Dandy to tribal trend.

Or, I should say, the change from masculine tailoring to feminine tribal dress seems strange at first... but consider Smith's African inspirations for the collection and it suddenly all makes a lot more sense. For - unlike what you would expect from Sir Paul Smith - the suiting is not prim British tailoring, but the relaxed cuts and warm colours of the Congolese sapeur.

The tribal skirts and dresses are a patchwork of clashing patterns; from animal prints to takes on Smith's signature stripe. Mascline or feminine, however, the common thread through the collection is that is distinctly Smith's own.

There aren't too many alpha-females out there and, though she might deny it, Tania Braukamper certainly exudes their qualities. A keen eye, a focused approach, and a wardrobe spanning three rooms have made her one of the savviest of dressers. But it's not all couture for Tania, earning her fashionista credentials she'll frequently be seen on the town in a one-off, vintage dress and a pair of Gucci heels.

She says: Vintage will never go out of style
We say: Does that include vintage 80s?
