Shooting in her typical playful yet sexualised style for the latest issue of Vanity Fair, Ellen von Unwerth focuses her lens on the starlets from the upcoming period drama Boardwalk Empire. With the recent success of Mad Men and its influence on mainstream fashion heralding a ’60s fashion revival it’s obvious that a strong enough show will easily push a fledgling over the tipping point. Boardwalk Empire is set during the roaring twenties with the flapper fashion from which its wardrobe will be taking it’s major queues. Does this mean we’ll be seeing a revival of the zoot suit soon? Probably not, but don’t underestimate the power of Martin Scorcese and the twenties mafia.
Though I digress. The shoot features Gretchen Mol, Paz de la Huerta, Kelly Macdonald, and Aleksa Palladino who’ll be featured in the show as the gangster’s molls. With their gorgeous pin-up figures Unwerth utilises the girls perfectly photographing them in several varga-esque poses. While the shoot is obviously a promotional one Unwerth’s ability to photograph her subject sans inhibitions makes it one of the best of it’s kind we’ve seen.
