There are many elements (some unknown and others known) involved when creating something of great refinement and elegance, in order to execute this style correctly you need to form a certain air with those particular ideals in mind. This is exactly what Jason Lau has done with this exquisite fashion shoot. He manages to bring all the rudiments of female temperament into this shoot: attitude, sexuality, grace, natural presence, power. Allow your eyes to wonder from portrait to portrait, allow them to linger on each expression, to absorb the vastness of some shots and the denseness of others.
Hair and make-up, by Annika Bowen, is done to show the natural and rustic beauty that lies within model Rhiannon Tragear-Ragg. The diversity within Tragear-Ragg’s image is seen with the quick change in style: a side-swept updo gives her an air of elegance and poise, while a textured side-braid shows her more organic side.
Pieces styled by Kristina Schapova (from designers Susan Rep, Mina and Katusha – all at Gusto & Elan) make use of textured materials and deep colours; bright purple dresses (with earthly patterns), snakeskin jackets and long flowing lace set the tone of sexuality and composure. Lau and Schapova bring into play a horse in the shoot: it’s presence alone signifying the grace and regality that can be found within both nature and human design… not forgetting the pure luxury that it too can represent (note the diamanté bridle).
