The presence of light in photography is a masterful symbol of life in terms of its applicability to a universal audience… it has a different meaning and interpretation to each individual and therefore stirs the mind to think in different directions. In a shoot for Dew Magazine, photographer Julia Blank creates an ethereal look promoting softness and enigmatic nature behind femininity. The notable styling by Kerstin J. Hajdu of the model’s hair plays around with the ‘wet-look’ retaining its dominance into the 2013 hair stylings. The free flowing slick texture of the hair notes a certain effortless in appearance, all the while maintaining a sense of poise and elegance.
The wet style is also a modern variation on the classic bedhead, due to the ‘stepped out of the shower/pool/sea’ look it denotes a woman in motion, a modern go-getter, living a life in movement.
By creating portraits that are face-specific and detailed, with an adverse blur of light aligned with each photograph, Blank creates the contrast of detail and abstraction, clear and vague, expression and obscurity. The make-up is generally subtle, with a few unusual additions – red eyebrows, which ensures that you don’t glance over any image without taking in the detail in expression and manifestation.
