There is a story hiding behind every image, just like there is a concept hiding behind every story and yet most of the times, when trying to translate the immediate significance of an image we rely on feelings, on their echo imprinted on us and on a first impression. Black and white imagery comes across clean, minimal, somewhat mysterious but it takes true vision to make it really stand out. Igor Oussenko’s beautiful photography speaks no differently. It carries a unique voice and powerful attitude. Lots of it in fact.
As opposed to the pretty lively pictures that rely on a play of colors, monochrome photography needs essence in order to communicate, and its own soul. IMG model Aspen mirrors the bold spirit in the dramatic sequence of photos in which she identifies with darkness and seductiveness just as easily, just as clearly. Either dressed in a Damir Doma jacket and trousers ensemble, or in a sophisticated Jeremy Laing dress, there is no telling when androgyny ends and femininity begins.
With graphic make-up by Kate Kudrina and a singular take on the messy curls envisioned by Yaroslav Olkov, Aspen holds all the answers as to why black and white photography will forever remain beyond compare. To witness the entire monochrome shoot by Igor Oussenko, click on the thumbnails above.
