Hair full of rollers, a cigarette being lit between full lips. These words paint a picture of a woman amidst the ritual of beautification, but also one of another era. With curves amplified by hourglass silhouettes – a soft lace Simone Perele bodysuit, a high waisted skirt and crop top – model Mercy is part way between the retro nostalgia of a 1950s roadhouse motel and the understated glamour of the modern world. In this space she occupies, a varsity jacket or oversized tee are just as sexy as leather and lace.

Photographer Kelly Defina (kellydefina.com) was inspired by the classic curves of Mercy, her model and muse (represented by plus size agency Bella Models), and the idea that a shapely figure is the perfect canvas for styling the season’s retro-inspired trends. Leonie Karagiannis (leoniekaragiannis.com.au) complimented the looks with the rolled hair giving way to sexy tousled waves, and darkly smokey eyemakeup with a slightly graphic, ’60s edge.
