Dressing for the urban jungle

A day’s activities help determine its uniform, whether you know you’re going to find yourself standing on your feet all day or sitting in an office; and the idea of roaming the streets and feeling at home in them dictates a certain style of its own. We’re focusing specifically on all things street this week, and so it’s fitting that our Monday should incorporate Hicham Riad’s shoot for Elle Belgium starring Yana Bovenistier and Chavelli Inghels.

In an urban landscape that equally incorporates grand old buildings and graffitied walls, Carolien Swinnen’s styling is ideal. Attitude-laden embellished beanies, print dresses and bold colours are at times boyish, at times feminine and sophisticated. Riad’s photography, meanwhile, plays to the story of two friends having fun away from the indoors.

Inspiring both streetwear dressing and the fun had wearing it, you can view all of Hicham Riad’s (myhicham.net) shoot for Elle Belgium, September 2013, by clicking on the gallery.

Some people's wardrobes are about a small selection of pieces that all fit within one aesthetic - Tania Braukamper isn't such a person. With a wardrobe that spans three different rooms, her approach to fashion is a mixture of current-season key pieces mixed with vintage finds she's sourced on innumerous shopping trips around the world's more cultured capitals. Despite a disparate approach to shopping, Tania is adamant that the key to mixing vintage with new season is to stick to key looks and colours that work for oneself. And it's a theory that she works into her writing for Fashionising.com, where she serves as the publication's Editor.
