Before dismissing sexy ladies in bunny ears as flippant, know that I am of course aware of the significance of Easter as an event on the religious calendar. Yes I spent my Easter Sunday morning at a historically and architecturally fascinating Portuguese church, listening to mass in a language I couldn’t quite understand. Outside the pews the original message is, as with every major Christian occasion, hidden amongst the commercial evolution like chocolate eggs around a garden. As a somewhat non-denominational holiday Easter is about bunnies and eggs and hot cross buns (though, not in Portugal to my dismay. Someone send me one?) and I figure that if you’re someone who celebrates it from a Christ-is-risen perspective then, well, you’ll have done your masses and family lunches. And if you’re not then it makes no difference to you anyway.
And so that vaguely explained (a Jewish friend asked me the other day what “Catholic guilt” means… Ahem.) I’ll leave any further discussion about commerciality and religious occasions aside. Instead, in a tradition I apparently started last Halloween, here are 6 Easter-themed pinups – because a bit of retro goodness is as sweet as chocolate, only without the calories.
