Familiarity can be as comforting as a warm blanket, but the true euphoria begins in the unknown. It’s the mingling of excitement, anticipation, adventure, trepidation; the boldness of having no plans and wanting none, the beautiful anonymity of being a stranger in a brave new world. It’s letting the sunlight call you outdoors so you can lose yourself in the winding cobbled streets and ancient hills, forgetting time because you’re too enraptured with soaking up every new sight and sound that forms the unfamiliar city around you.
Go alone. Go on foot. When something catches your eye, follow it. Indulge your curiosity. Eat in places where there’s no English menu and where the interior decorating is an afterthought – hipster design is inversely proportional to authenticity in most places. Peer around corners and behind doors. Learn how to order coffee in the local language. Wear a signature scent every time you go exploring: every whiff of it from now until eternity will flood you with memories of the trip, and it will become your time capsule – your madeleine.
My latest adventures took me to Lisbon, Portugal – the perfect place to contemplate what euphoria means to me and shoot this series of photos as a little project for the new Calvin Klein fragrance, Endless Euphoria. You can pick up one of the gorgeous bottles for yourself here.
